Soy vs. Paraffin Wax Candles

Let's shine some light on the topic of candle wax. What are the most popular in the industry? Which are most harmful and which should you use for an eco-friendly candle?

Have you ever thought about what’s really in your candle? Not all candles are created equal and not all are poured with the same type of wax. Four popular types of candle wax are paraffin, coconut, soy and beeswax.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the differences between soy and paraffin wax candles specifically. We’ll dive into both of these wax types, the reasons why paraffin wax may be considered detrimental and the reasons we love pouring 100% soy wax candles.

Paraffin wax candles have been widely used for decades, but concerns have arisen regarding their potential negative impacts. Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum refining. Soy wax, on the other hand, is derived from soybean oil, making it a natural and renewable resource. It’s biodegradable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly.

Why Is Paraffin Wax Harmful?

One significant concern with paraffin wax candles is the release of potentially harmful chemicals when they burn.

These chemicals, such as benzene and toluene, are known to be carcinogenic. They pollute the air we, as well as our kids and fur babies, breathe in at home.

Paraffin wax candles tend to produce more soot too. Ever noticed a black outline on the walls behind a picture frame? That’s from your candle’s soot which may also pose respiratory risks when inhaled.

Paraffin wax is derived from fossil fuels. The extraction and production of paraffin wax can have negative environmental consequences. Unlike soy wax, paraffin wax is not biodegradable. This means that paraffin wax candles can contribute to environmental pollution and waste.

Are Soy Wax Blends Toxic?

Soy wax blends combine soy wax with other materials that vary in composition.

While pure soy wax is non-toxic and safe to burn, some soy wax blends may be mixed with paraffin wax or can also include additives and fragrances that could potentially release harmful chemicals when burned.

To ensure safety, check the ingredients list and opt for candles that clearly state they are made with 100% soy wax. Morale of the story: be cautious of those soy wax blends.

5 Benefits of Soy Wax Candles

Soy wax candles are often favored by eco-conscious consumers due to their sustainability. At Vellabox, we pour our candles with 100% soy wax.

Here are some of the many reasons we love soy wax and 5 seasonal candles we’re loving right now!

CLEAN BURNING

We use 100% soy wax in all of our Vellabox candles because they burn cleaner than paraffin wax candles with minimal soot and emissions. This makes them a healthier choice for indoor air quality.

SUSTAINABLE

Soy wax is derived from a renewable resource—soybeans. It supports sustainable agriculture practices and reduces our reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels.

BIODEGRADABLE

Soy wax is biodegradable, meaning it breaks down naturally without harming the environment. It’s an eco-friendly choice for conscious consumers.

LONGER BURN TIME

Soy wax candles tend to burn slower and last longer than paraffin wax candles of the same size, providing better value for your money. Since soy wax has a lower melting point, they cause less of a fire hazard than paraffin wax candles.

BETTER SCENT THROW

Soy wax holds fragrances well, resulting in a more robust and consistent scent throughout the candle’s lifespan. We enjoy pairing soy wax with phthalate & paraben free fragrances.
